Katong is bursting with energy, and is constantly changing. Take a walk down Joo Chiat Road and you’ll see old stores next to new ones, reminding you that times and tastes are constantly evolving. Lovely Peranakan houses and culture, wonderful food and unique crafts all housed in a bustling part of town. From throngs of people during the day, to buzzing bars at night. Katong offers plenty to residents and visitors.

Nestled along the fringe of Katong lies malls which are shells of their former glory. These malls and establishments were once bustling with life and excitement, now they lie dormant, waiting for their impending demise. Some have gone through unsuccessful rounds of en-bloc, others still manage to get by with whatever footfall they receive. But further down there East Coast Road meets Joo Chiat Road, there is a noticeable change in energy.

A divide between the bustling shophouses and these Former Giants has emerged. But we’re in Katong, and the spirit of harmonising the old and the new is what Katong does best.
